It’s been a fun two days in this beautiful area! Yesterday
we took the marina loaner vehicle and ran errands, along with Kathy and John
from Serenity. We hit the shops in downtown Beaufort, while Mark was able to
donate blood. We made stops at Walmart, Napa, Publix, a hardware store, West
Marine, two liquor stores, and ate lunch at IHOP. We were worn out after all of
that running around!
Today we drove over to Beaufort and walked around the historic
houses around the Point area. Wow- so many fascinating houses! Way back when,
tabby was used in building construction. Tabby is a type of concrete made by
burning oyster shells to make lime, then mixing it with water, sand, and broken
oyster shells. Here’s an exposed wall in downtown Beaufort.

This afternoon the four of us drove over to Parris Island,
home of the Marine Corp Recruit Depot and the Parris Island Museum. The museum
covers the history of this area and that of the Marine Corps. As we approached
the museum, dozens of new recruits came out of the building to form up outside.
As we walked by, every single one of them greeted us with “Good afternoon,
Ladies. Good afternoon, Gentlemen.” It was so impressive! They are required to
greet visitors in this fashion.
After our adventures, we cleaned the fly bridge, filled the
water tanks, and prepared food for dock tails. Fruitcakes caught up with us
today, so our group was back to six. We watched the Kentucky Derby during dock
tails.

Tomorrow will bring an early departure and a long cruising day to reach
Charleston.
Look for Jackets II in Charleston, Stephen and Charlotte on a 52' Kady Krogren!
