Shiloh Battlefield

Today we borrowed the marina's loaner minivan and drove to nearby Shiloh National Military Park with Gina and Steve from Island Time and Brenda and Glenn from Young at Heart. We began our visit at the Visitor Center where we watched a 32 minute film describing the horrific 2-day battle that took place here in April 1862. The film was fascinating! (Even for those who don't love history as much as I do.) then we drove through the park, which is quite large, and checked out the 20 or so significant areas. It was a beautiful fall day, and the experience was both amazing and haunting. I know I will be thinking about this place for a long time to come. I am trying to find out whether my great-great-great (I think) grandfather from Ohio fought here. There were many men from Iowa in this battle as well, and there are quite a few memorials to Iowa guys scattered around the battlefield. There were more than 23,000 casualties at Shiloh!

We ended our excursion with a provisioning trip to Savannah, TN, a few miles away. Never have I been so excited to go to Walmart!!
